International Fly Fishing Film Festival, aka IF4

22 Mar

Last night I went to the IF4.  First off a big thanks to our local club the Ottawa Fly Fishers and our local fly shop Green Drake Outfitters for sponsoring the event in Ottawa.

I had never been to a fly fishing film screening before. It was a packed house. My father in law came into town for the event and I met a few friends there.

The mood was very festive. Most of the guys are part of the local fly fishing club. Some of these guys meet every week in the winter, some wait for crappie season to seek out other members of the group.

Probably the highlight of the night was during one of the films (I don’t want to give anything away), the protagonist sets his sights on a really nice brown trout playfully feasting on nymphs or emergers in the middle of the water column. The first cast, the fish engages moves sideways six inches then follows the fly another foot ana a half before … Rejecting the fly and swimming back to its lie. The sound of a hundred men and twenty women all going ‘Ohhhhhhhhhh’ at the same time was awesome. I pictured everyone at home on youtube watching the same movie and making the same sounds. I knew I was where I belong.

All the films were excellent. The Beard Chronicles was very funny. A Delberate Life is going to make you think twice about how (and where) you are living. And there are plenty of nods to conservation and the battles that rage over its very definition and best practices. Check out the film list and schedule.

This festival is definitely worth visiting if there is one near you or contact the guys at IF4, you could host a showing. I am pretty sure that is what our local club, the Ottawa Fly Fishers, did.

PS – I won a Airflo Ridge Tropical 10wt line. Now I don’t own anything bigger than a 6wt, but I can think of a better reason to pick up a big stick for the great lakes tributories, big pike, gar pike and musky. Any rod suggestions?
